To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, us gringo's decided to throw an all day Mexican fiesta to the tune of a 9-Piece Mariachi Band & Taco Pop-Up from Boca Grande! Please note, we're throwing the party on Sunday 4th of May as it's a bank holiday!

But why? Well, here's a quick history lesson first..

During the Troubles, Dundalk became known as a place where the hard men of the republican movement hung out and waited for their next foray across the border. It was in this period of 1968-1998 that Dundalk earned the nickname 'El Paso', after the town in Texas on the border with Mexico. A century ago, in much different times, a much different El Paso was also known as a haven for outlaws in the US.

In the true spirit of the town, we took our (somewhat derogatory) nickname and made the most of it by sending David Keenan's rendition in Maxi's Taxi viral - hitting the airwaves across Ireland and even Texas. From 'Fundalk', to 'The Town', we've had a few nicknames, but we know one thing - we're proud of this wee patch of ours!

So, what's the suss for the day?

Grab your sombrero 'cos the all-day fiesta officially starts from 4pm. Our café is open as normal 11-4pm if you fancy coming in a bit earlier though! Get in & grab yourself a nice perch and redeem your free taco at the Boca Grande taco pop-up anytime from 4-7pm in the gairdín. They will also be serving €4 tacos or go for our new El Paso Tex-Mex specials. That's grub covered, now are ye thirsty? We're doing pitchers of margs for the day that's in it or stubbys covered in hot sauce and tajin (yes, you read that right).

Ok - you're fed and watered. What about the tunes? We've a 9-piece Mariachi band coming first time ever to Dundalk. A crazy ensemble of musicians that play ranchera, regional Mexican music dating back to at least the 18th century. That's not all. We've 'Brand New Retro' with a vinyl set from Mark Quigley to make it a party and take us home.

Now - that's a party!
